WANNABEE KING OF THE MOUNTAIN INFO
Handicap Explained
We want to apply a correction factor for gender and age and therefore level all the results to equality.
Every rider plus his bicycle and equipment will be weighed. This will give us their total riding mass. Based on that weight and their time up the hill we will be able to calculate the total POWER output based on following formula:
Overall Watts Formula
Wrider = Cfriction x V x P + Cair x (V + Vwind)^2 x V+ Cslope x P x Slope% x V + acceleration
Once we know your total POWER (WATTS) output we will apply a correction factor for your gender and your age.
For a male youngster below 19y the correction factor is 19-his age/8
Exp: if he's 16y then we will add 0.375 x his output watts to his corrected total
For a female youngster below 19y the correction factor is 19-her age/5
Exp: if she's 16y then we will add 0.6 x her output watts to her corrected total
For a male above 30y the correction factor is his age-30/100
Exp: if he's 45y then we will add 0.15 x his output watts to his corrected total
For a female above 30y the correction factor is her age-30/25
Exp: if she's 45y then we will add 0.6 x her output watts to her corrected total
THANKS TO THIS CORRECTION FACTOR EVERYONE IS ABLE TO WIN THE WANNABEE KING OF THE MOUNTAIN CLIMB!
WANNABEE KING OF THE MOUNTAIN SPONSORS
Monday, April 26, 2010
Hello to all the Wannabees
Seems like a lot of people have made this a long weekend. Still had a nice turnout on Saturday. Medium ride with lekka coffee at Dulce’s afterwards.
I would encourage riders to join us after rides for coffee. It is a good way to get to know your fellow club members.
Main event for the week will be the
THE KING OF THE MOUNTAIN HILLCLIMB
next Saturday. Heard from a few members that they felt that they had no chance. That is not what it is all about. This is a serious fun event with a handicap system that gives everyone a good chance.
Come and join us. Details on the BLOG
Please look on the BLOG. The first of the new MTB rides has been put on the menu. Winter time is great fir the MTB. The first will be a ride for all and the second a more serious MTB ride
Pieter has printed new tops. Please contact him or Petie if you need one.
Otherwise, watch out, winter fat seems to accumulate quite quickly around the waste. Keep on peddling, the DC is around the corner
See you at the Hill climb

Wannabee MTB rides
Due to popular demand Wannabee MTB organised group rides will start in May
Dates to diarise are as follows:
Monday, April 19, 2010
Hello to all the Wannabees
I have been overrun with e-mails regarding races (road and off road) so I have asked Michel to place the ‘posters’/links on the BLOGG. Locally there will be the first of the mountain bike series at Helderberg farm. See the info through the link or contact Petie.
Another worthwhile initiative is BEN. This is an initiative that we have had a look at and found to be worth supporting. They are running a circuit type race in Simonstown area with the exclusive aim to raise money to help getting the underprivileged to set up cycle shops and get youngsters to start riding bikes again. Try to get a few friends and let’s support this as a club.
There should be a link to BEN from the BUZZ site
I have not seen any results of races so I cannot report back
Our HILLCLIMB is in 2 weeks time. All is set and we `are looking forward to a lekka fun day on the 1st of MAY.
All the detail is on the BLOG
I have spent the weekend on a golf tour in Natal (you know those things John regularly attends!) but can now definitely state that cycling is cheaper and less frustrating. This of course does not mean that one cannot try again.
Make sure that you get one of the first long sleeve tops. We have made them and should be available from Pieter or Petie

BEN Red Hill Charity Challenge
BEN is hosting an event on 23 May – have a look at http://www.benbikes.org.za/charitychallenge/index.php for information, registration, and sponsoring a cyclist. This will be a tough endurance event, 11 hours of a hilly Redhill to Cape Point circuit, sunrise to sunset. The proceeds of all sponsorship goes to BEN for bicycles and training of previously disadvantaged school kids so they can better access school, home and be more independent. We are hoping to sign up 100-150 cyclists for the day, and to raise R500.000 which will bring an enormous amount of bicycles and training to many new communities. I am hereby appealing to you all to spread this information as widely as you can to you network of friends and contacts.
Regards
Andrew

Gravity Watts
The formula for Gravity is: Watts_to_overcome_gravity = 9.81 x P x %slope x V. Where Cslope is a coefficient, P is your weight, and V is your speed on the road. The faster you go, the more you weigh, and the steeper the slope, the more power is required to take you up the hill.
Friction Watts
The formula for Friction is: Watts_to_overcome_friction = 0.1 x V x P
When the velocity V is measured in meters/second and the weight P is measured in kilos, for a decent quality bike, with well-inflated racing tires on a smooth road, the metric Cfriction is said to be about 0.1.
Wind Resistence Watts
The formula for Wind Resistance is: W_to_overcome_air_resistance = Cair x (V + Vwind)^2 x V. If there is no wind, it is simply: Cair x V^3.
For the metric system, Cair ranges from perhaps 0.8 for a city bike without baggage or a hybrid with baggage, to .7 for a mountain bike or loaded touring bike to perhaps 0.45 for a hybrid or upper position on a racing bicycle without baggage, to as low as 0.36 for full racing position on a conventional racing bike.
Overall Watts Formula
Wrider = Cfriction x V x P + Cair x (V + Vwind)^2 x V+ Cslope x P x Slope% x V + acceleration

Hello to all the Wannabees
Had our meeting last night. Sure is great to work with such dedicated committee members.
Main items of importance are that we will have bimonthly mountain bike rides during the winter. We are planning one formal ride for the more technical able riders and one ride for the riders who prefer the rolling hills type rides. In that way we can hopefully accommodate most of the riders. Thanks to Ralph Rudd and Clayton Hindle for sorting this out.
Our BUZZ will persist but will probably become part of the new WEBSITE. Between Michel de Clippel and Deon van Zijl they will setup a website which should be set up by the end of June
Club membership now at 150 members with over a 1000 hits per month on the BLOG
We will be ordering 30 winter tops as per photo on the BLOG. Make sure you get one of the first. They will be available from Pieter Schoeman or from Helderberg Cycle world
The BASIN MOUNTAINBIKE CLUB has made a good offer to interested Wannabee members. You can join their club for R500 per year and ride as many times as you want in Lourensford during their weekend rides, or you can as a Wannabee member pay a discounted price of R20 per ride ( R40 for non-members) without joining their club. This is of course subject to the normal procedure of pre booking at Cycle Addiction and the availability of space. Please contact Malan for the details. Thank you to their team for accommodating our members in such a way
The main event for May will be the HILLCLIMB on the 1st of May. Details on the BLOG.
As you will see, due to the handicapping system any and everyone will have a chance to win. Even the chairman due to his age and extra weight. So do not miss this event. Non club members can for R20 also participate. Prizes and trophies for diferent categories will be handed out.
If anyone has a small prize to donate, please contact our organiser Michel through the club’s or my e-mail address.
Then the usual reminders
PLEASE NOTE
Winter start times. LSD rides on weekends will start at 07h00
AN URGENT APPEAL ONCE AGAIN TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR M/AID DETAILS AND ICE CONTACT DETAILS ARE IN YOUR SADDLE BAG AND ON YOUR CELL

DIRTOPIA MTB FESTIVAL
The Dirtopia Mountain Bike Festival is a family event and offers an array of activities such as a skills clinic, dirt jumping, funrides, downhill, hillclimb, a spectacular night ride, night dual and the much anticipated bicycle polo tournament. Children can look forward to loads of fun in the Spur activities area.
Take of work for the Friday to enjoy the celebration of mountain biking for the whole weekend.
Skills Clinic: Do not miss Hannele Steyn Kotze's mountain bike workshop on Friday, 30 April 2010 at 14h00. The cost is R250 per person and is open to male and female riders. Topics that will be focused on include dealing with basic technical skills, bicycle maintenance, nutrition and more. Feel free to ask this South African mountain bike legend as many questions as possible, just remember to bring your gear i.e. bike, helmet, gloves, water-bottle etc and a notebook.
The Dirtopia Enduro on Saturday morning, is a treat for riders that want to see more of this beautiful area. The entertainment at the Freeride, Dirt Jumping, Night Dual etc. afterwards is a must-see. Then Sunday morning riders can experience more of the fantastic singletrack during the second funride of the weekend. According to Darryn Stow, a well-known face in the South African FreeRiding circles, the Dirtopia Mountain Bike Festival is most certainly a highlight on the MTB calendar – especially for adrenaline seeking freeriders. Darryn started BMX racing at the age of 3 and will be competing in the BMX World Championships to be hosted in Pietermaritzburg in July. He was introduced to freeriding at the 2006 Dirtopia Mountain Bike Festival - and has been competing ever since."I've always enjoyed freeriding, but unfortunately there aren't that many competitions in South Africa, which is why I don't miss a Dirtopia event. I just love the adrenaline and the challenge. Each year the jumps get bigger and the drops get higher, which means there is always a challenge and something to be scared of. Freeriding requires a lot of bike skill and you definitely need to be brave and confident in your own abilities. Although it is an amazing sport, it can also be dangerous. My advise to beginners is to start small and build your way up to bigger jumps and drops. No other event comes close to Dirtopia Mountain Bike Festival. There is such a great vibe as everyone is there to have fun and ride there bikes. Meurant, Arina and the rest of the crew do such an amazing job every year, people can't wait to go back," says Stow.
