NOTE NEW STARTING TIME FOR WEEKEND RIDES
The Chairman is back, kill the chairman quickly !!!!!
This weekend the air was polluted with a testosterone mist. Saturday morning the ride back from Rooi-els was a race for first prize. Willem du Toit,
soon to be married, Herzel and myself hanging on for dear life. Then a LSD on Sunday up Du Toits Kloof pass and back, certainly a big wake up call. Felt much better after getting in the car in Stellenbosch.
Jack Ackermann has a fractured rib or two which he sustained after a fall last week, Nothing stops the man, back on his bike at full speed this past weekend
Turnouts on weekends getting bigger. Please try not to ride more than two abreast and single file if there is no shoulder. I know we all want to chat, but safety first
As for now the focus is on the DC
A few teams are looking at the ONETONNER as a training ride. Enter in time if your team is going to do this. Please contact your team captain
Mid September should see the morning sessions start up. More about that later
CLUBRACE REMINDER
No new update today
Michel is looking into setting up a ‘hill climb handicap race’ for club members. Most of you will remember that this was a very popular and fun event two years ago. Keep an eye on the blog for dates and details
AGM REMINDER
Thanks for the offer to use the Scouthall. We shall follow-up on this.
For practical reasons the AGM will be held in mid October 2009.
We need good attendance and a venue. If anyone has any contacts for a venue that could accommodate about 60 people, please contact me.
Anyone wishing to stand for any position on the club committee, please contact me. We will then get a nomination form sent out
WEEKEND RIDES
NOTE THAT START TIMES FOR WEEKEND RIDES WILL BE 06H30 ASOF THE WEEKEND OF THE 5/6 SEPTEMBER 2009.
Please ensure that you have good front and back lights on your bike. There are still some riders with very poor lights on their bikes.

Hello everyone
Spring is upon us, warmer mornings, nice bit of South Easter wind and earlier sunlight
NOTE NEW STARTING TIME FOR WEEKEND RIDES
Good group rides this weekend past, ride to Rooi Els just for Danie Malan we organised some wind and Sunday the turnout was more than 30 riders
With the groups getting bigger splits will happen. Try and be sensible. Select a group that fits your abilities and if you then feel stronger than the group, take on the front end and pull the others.
If you feel that the group you are in is to strong, please tell the others in the group that you are going to fall back to a slower group. We want to accommodate everyone and we want to ensure that everyone gets home safely
We had a our Kermesse’s wrap-up meeting last night.
The attendance was poor despite a lot of effort put in by club members and the organising committee
We shall report back to WPCA and see what the future holds
As for now the focus is on the DC
This weekend is DC grouptraining time again. Make sure what time your group is leaving and enjoy
A few teams are looking at the ONETONNER as a traing ride. Enter in time if your team is going to do this.
Mid September should see the morning sessions start up. More about that later
CLUBRACE
Michel is looking into setting up a ‘hill climb handicap race’ for club members. Most of you will remember that this was a very popular and fun event two years ago. Gives the old and or overweight riders a fair chance to compete (a downhill race would be better suited for Robbie and myself)
Keep an eye on the blog for dates and details
AGM

A date will be set in the next newsletter

Please see the good work done by Hertzel to provide a safer cycling environment with regards to the poor markings on the R44 adjacent to the Mall.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH HERTZEL - YOUR EFFORTS ARE REALLY APPRECIATED!!!
WELL DONE
Charles Nesbitt
Hi Garth ,
Your Response is much appreciated......yes , it has been a long haul.
I am glad you concur and look forward to your suggested alterations been carried out at the earliest opportunity
Once again...many thanks
Kind Regards
Hertzel
Dear Hertzel
I appreciate that you may be feeling rather frustrated with the apparent lack of action from my side relating to the roadmarkings adjacent to the Somerset Mall. Although slow, the following progress has however been made:
Upon my return from a meeting in the area last week, I purposefully took a drive past the site in question. I noted the following:
1. Markings on the left lane are indeed rather faded (as you have reported)
2. The broken line section seems sufficiently long enough for us to reduce it ahead of the gore onto the N2 without negatively affecting the merge. The dark sections on the blacktop or premix generally indicate the most highly trafficked areas - based thereon it seems clear that most motorists are crossing over at the absolute last minute - even though there are a few hundred metres of broken line ahead of the gore.
3. The reduced spacing broken markings already exist prior to the solid marking at the gore - so my original proposal to add these only would not add any additional value at this stage.
Based on the above I concluded that we should extend the solid line by at least one road marking arrow module (with the “reduced” spacing broken markings ahead of same) - the relevant set of arrow road markings would therefore need to be change to yellow.
I have referred this matter to Deon Manuel (also of the Traffic Engineering section) for further investigation and action. We discussed this on Thursday last week;
By cc of this email I will request that Deon advise both you & Cllr Pringle on his progress WRT to preparation of a design and instruction to the relevant district / depot for implementation…along with anticipated timeframes applicable.
Your patience thus far is appreciated, we hope to resolve this matter in the near future.

Hello everyone
Back from 4 weeks touring Botswana and all, potjieskos and local beer tubes around the middle to prove the fact that it was a great rest
Glad to hear that the Kermesse went of well. Thanks to Anton and the team for putting it all together on the day and thanks to all the club members who helped and also to those who participated
The attendance from outside riders was pathetic to say the least. We shall have a wrap up meeting next Monday and report back to you and WPCA.
Thanks also to Wendy for managing the newsletter while I was away.
The DC training seems to be in full swing. Sunday saw a big group of riders heading off to Franschoek for coffee. Putting big kilometres in at this stage is what is needed. Quality will follow later.
If there are still riders who want to join teams, please contact us on the club e-mail or contact me on my e-mail if you are unsure.
Saturdays ride was broken up by a group chasing a truck on the way to Kuilsriver. I am sure that I did not see the naked lady on the back that seemed to have enticed the group to follow the truck at breakneck speed.
I do request riders to try and avoid doing this on club rides. We have some riders who are young and some riders with lesser abilities who will be sucked into the moment of fun. We all know how dangerous this type of riding is.
Enough said
The local Maverick shop is no longer with us, but Malan, who joined us on Saturdays ride, is still here. Good luck with the new shop and name.

Hi Wannabee members
This past weekend saw many members out on the road with some DC teams starting to get some distance under the belt. Sunday’s weather was perfect and warmed up enough for most to discard the warm jackets and let the Wannabee tops show again!
Attention all DC Captains, registration opens today at about lunchtime on the Coronation website. The teams need to be registered but members will only be entered about 10 days before DC.
Just to let you know that if you intend stopping at the Caltex garage near the Bottelary traffic lights, you will need R2 coins to use the bathroomsm make sure you put the money in the right slot otherwise you could end up using the wrong bathroom. (I talk from experience….) Well worth the money because the facilities are reasonable clean.
Remember the entries are open for the 1 Tonner on 18th October, early entries are open until 12 October costs are R140 with a R20 discount if you are a current PPA member, it will be great training for DC. It appears the route has been changed slightly due to the roadworks on Helshoogte, I am still waiting for confirmation and will let you know once confirmed. Watch this space…..
This weekend sees 2 Mtb events, on Saturday at De Hoop Nature Reserve and on Sunday at De Grendal Wine Estate – details on PPA website.
The provisional Spring calendar is available on the PPA website but it has not been confirmed yet. Some great rides coming up.
Starting times at Waterstone is still at 07h00, it is still a bit dark so make sure you have lights that work.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Wendy
Hi Wannabee Members
A great long weekend for riding, only slightly spoilt by the rain on Monday (the mountain bikes came in handy). I trust you were able to get many km's behind you.

Hi Wannabee members
Remember this Sunday, 9th August is our club race and Club Members ride for FREE! Please wear your Wannabee tops if possible. At this stage the weather is looking good so bring the family.
What a great weekends riding we had, the weather was fantastic and the sunrise on Sunday was truly spectacular! We found out that an old tube, with a bit of sludge in, does NOT inflate after it has been rolled up and stored for about a year. Please check your tyres and tubes and make sure the pressure is correct before each ride.
Entries are open for the 1 Tonner (see link below) early entries are open until 12 October costs are R140 with a R20 discount if you are a current PPA member, it will be great training for DC.

THE ROUTE
From the start at the Klein Joostenberg Farmstall, participants will cycle to Stellenbosch, and then over Helshoogte towards Franschhoek and Paarl before joining the R44 direction Wellington near the Fairview Estate. Cyclists will then turn onto the second Voorpaardeberg Road, right onto the Paardeberg Road and left onto the R302 (Malmesbury/Durbanville road) and back past the "fruit sellers" fourway to the venue. A cut-off will be enacted as cyclists pass Klein Joostenberg Farmstall before starting the last 25km loop, which will take you down to the Bottelary/Kromme Rhee Road, left towards the R44 and left again at the Klapmuts fourway stop to the finish on the R101 outside Klein Joostenberg.
There are still places available for the training and nutritional workshops starting tomorrow night 5/8/09, details on the blog.
Starting times at Waterstone is at 07h00, it is still dark so make sure you have lights, front and back, for the next couple of weeks.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Wendy
