Gravity Watts

The formula for Gravity is: Watts_to_overcome_gravity = 9.81 x P x %slope x V. Where Cslope is a coefficient, P is your weight, and V is your speed on the road. The faster you go, the more you weigh, and the steeper the slope, the more power is required to take you up the hill.

Friction Watts

The formula for Friction is: Watts_to_overcome_friction = 0.1 x V x P
When the velocity V is measured in meters/second and the weight P is measured in kilos, for a decent quality bike, with well-inflated racing tires on a smooth road, the metric Cfriction is said to be about 0.1.

Wind Resistence Watts

The formula for Wind Resistance is: W_to_overcome_air_resistance = Cair x (V + Vwind)^2 x V. If there is no wind, it is simply: Cair x V^3.

For the metric system, Cair ranges from perhaps 0.8 for a city bike without baggage or a hybrid with baggage, to .7 for a mountain bike or loaded touring bike to perhaps 0.45 for a hybrid or upper position on a racing bicycle without baggage, to as low as 0.36 for full racing position on a conventional racing bike.

Overall Watts Formula

Wrider = Cfriction x V x P + Cair x (V + Vwind)^2 x V+ Cslope x P x Slope% x V + acceleration

Double Century

The Coronation Double Century is a team event over a distance of 203 km, with up to twelve cyclists per team. The event, now in its 17th year, takes place on 21 November 2009.

Cyclists can once again look forward to starting and finishing in the picturesque town of Swellendam in the Western Cape. Teams will complete the most challenging climbs, Tradouw Pass as well as Op de Tradouw, within the first 60km of the race. From Swellendam cyclists follows the R324 through Suurbraak and over Tradouw Pass towards Barrydale. A left turn onto the R62 takes participants to the challenging 7km Op de Tradouw, before making their way to Montagu. The route then snakes through Cogmanskloof towards Ashton and Robertson, turning left onto the R317 towards Bonnievale and back to the finish in Swellendam.

The event has never been purely about the race, but rather about participation and team spirit. The Coronation Double Century is the cycling equivalent of an ultra marathon - you need to have trained if you want to finish in comfort. Teams will have 10 hours and 30 minutes from the team’s official start time, to complete the 203 kilometers.

DC (Double Century)

Dear Members

The majority of the members are fully acquainted with the DC (Double Century) cycle race whilst some of you have only heard it being mentioned.

The DC is a one day, 200km team event (maximum 12 and minimum 6 persons) per team which is scheduled to take place on Saturday 21 November 2009. The race starts and finishes in Swellendam, routing via Tradouw Pass, Montague, Ashton, Robertson, Bonnievale and returning to Swellendam. The DC can either be raced or cycled at a pace that suits all members of the particular team.

The Wannabee’s are intending to have the following 4 teams participating this year but this could be changed to accommodate as many of you as possible depending on the response to this e-mail.

Mixed racing team consisting of a minimum of 4 ladies. The intended finishing time is 6h45. Your normal “Argus” time (2008 not windy 2009) should be sub 3 hrs.

The Wannabee Better Team of Andre Van Der Merwe, with an intended finishing time of 7h15. Your Argus time should be sub 3h15.

The Fast Social team of John Arnold with an intended finishing time of 7h45. Your Argus time should be sub 3h30.

The Social team of Wendy Botha with an intended finishing time of 9h00. Your Argus time should be +- 4-41/2 hrs

Once we have received your replies and collated the information we will then assess whether we have the correct mix of teams and you will be informed accordingly.

Please note that once you have been allocated to a team the team captain will then be responsible for the training program and training rides. He or she will also give each team member all information regarding the correct nutritional and supplementation necessary for the DC.

As a participant you are expected to participate in as many team training rides as possible but we realise that family and work commitments might interfere. However it is unfair that come the day your team is waiting for a member that has not trained sufficiently and is holding back the team. Heart rate monitors are generally assumed to be a pre-requisite as the team training is based on the each member’s heart rate.

As we would like to finalize the provisional teams as soon as possible, please could you e-mail me direct your name and Argus time, if you are interested in cycling this year’s DC. Please reply to me at
jmca@mweb.co.za

Some team captains have already contacted certain club members but if you are unsure of whether your name is included please e-mail me again.

Kind regards

John Arnold

The AMAZING CAPE MTB RACE is on!!!!

2009 The Wines2Whales (W2W) multi-stage (3 day) MTB event is on for 25 - 27 April 2009. Start: 25 April @ 07h00 at Lourensford Estate, Somerset West
Finish: 27 April at Hermanus High School, Hermanus (220 km in total)
Entries limited to 250 teams (pairs)

There was a lot of talk about the W2W till we got our MTBs in a row and systematically started to scout the route over an eight month period. During the hottest weekend in December 2008, fifty pioneers consisting of fast and slow riders, first and old timer cycled the W2W route to experience it and told us how to improve the route. A key objective was to create a CAPE multi-stage MTB event that blends fun and endurance.

The first stage starts at Lourensford, along the Schapensberg farms and wineries, Grabouw forest to Oak Valley, the sleep over venue in Elgin, a total distance of 70 km. Stage two starts at Oak Valley, along the Eikenhof Dam, to Lebanon forest and back to Oak Valley, covering 70 km. Stage three runs to De Rust, Houwhoek, along the Botrivier up to Karwyderskraal, down to Hemel-en-Aarde and on Rotary View Drive to Hermanus High School, measuring 80 km. What's magic about the W2W?!; The route includes five mountains, one world biosphere reserve and four conservation areas, it crosses 30 farms, 18 wineries, forests, fynbos, grasslands, never ending scenic views and plenty of awesome jeep and single tracks!

Part of the W2W vision is to promote wineries and their products. Therefore most water points are located at wineries, allowing supporters accessible and relaxing view points, along the route. Supporters can also cycle the shorter MTB routes on Oak Valley Farm during the afternoons, after completion of the race stages.

The entry fee is R2 500 per participant and includes tents, mattresses, fruit and meals. Stillwater Sport and Entertainment is the W2W event partner (involved in the XTERRA and Totalsports events). Click here for pictures of the pioneer ride. The website opens 9 February and entries at 06h00 on 16 February 2009.

Good luck with your entry en al le die berge nog so blou, get the training going and rolling!!
