The program is designed for the average 35 - 40 year old, who has a maximum of 9 hours per week available for training.
The minimum program duration is 12 weeks, therefore the program started on Monday 15 December already. We are therefor in week 2 now.
NB! Novices and people who are unfit should consult a physician before embarking on the program.
The club rides are structured to incorporate the program, therefor members shouldn't have to worry about their training if they keep training with the club's outrides.
Program for the following weeks:
Week 2
Total time 7:30
Time in green 6:20 50 - 70%
Time in blue 0:45 70 - 80%
Time in yellow 0:25 80 - 90%
This week: (Please note if you do all the rides scheduled here you will exceed the program time requirements. Err on the conservative side if this is the case, therefor do the extra time in green zone rather than blue zone or yellow zone)

Goeie dag almal
For those who thought that no newsletter would ever appear, well here is number one.
The DC and DIE BURGER have come and gone and with the festive season and THE ARGUS due soon, training focus has to change as most riders see the ARGUS as a PB test ride
A training program will be out soon as the ARGUS is sooner than you think. Keep the legs spinning in the meantime.
I have had the opportunity to partake in the recci ride for the wine2whale race planned for some time in April 2009
For those who want to get the feeling of a 2 day stage race and also experience the best of mountain bike trails between LOURENSFORD and HERMANUS, watch out, the entries will be limited but the ride will be something else
Until early in the new year when the committee will meet for the second time, club riding will be as follows:
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 05h30 from Waterstone Village Centre
Saturdays and Sundays at 06h00 from Waterstone Village Centre
On the 16th and 26th we will start at 06h00
We will have a comm. member present at each ride to coordinate the rides
Please wear your wannabee/C2H shirts on weekend rides. This weekend groups of over 20 riders went out. Both days had a fast and slower group. Most of the riders were dressed in club shirts, this proudness of identity is what we should strive for
Please ride safely and listen to the callers instructions. We all want to enjoy the rides and arrive back safely for coffee.
The renewal notices have been distributed, please complete and return to Charles as soon as possible
Please put the blog address on your computer hotspot

LOCAL CYCLING CLUB DOES WELL AT DOUBLE CENTURYThe sixteenth annual Double Century cycle event was held on Saturday 22nd November in the Overberg area which took in a circular route of 204km from Swellendam via Montague and Bonnievale.Over two thousand cyclists participated in teams of between six and twelve members were once again, like last year faced with gruelling conditions and it is no wonder the event is dubbed as the "comrades" of cycling. While the first 120km were realitively wind free and riders enjoyed cool conditions after a week of heavy storms, the last 80 km from Robertson the cyclists battled challenging side winds to the finish line. There were eight teams in total from the Basin, five of which were from Cycling Club Helderberg. Local rider, Ryan Kemp was part of the winning team, Daiken- Gu who finished in a blistering 5hrs 29min to beat the favourite all proffesional Neotel team who finished third. Helderberg Ladies team won the Ladies Racing category in 6hrs 56min. The first "C2HW" club team home led by Henning van Wyk completed the route in 6hrs 35min followed by Henri Meier's "Wannabee Faster" team, Michel de Clippel's "Wannabee Better" team, John Arnold's "C2H" team and last but not least the "Wannabee Slow Spokes" who finished just under the ten hour mark. In the picture the "slow Spokes" enjoy a most welcome feeding stop after ascending Trudouw pass.

Cape Town traffic steps up ‘red eye’ road blocks
AS growing numbers of cyclists take to Cape Town’s roads early in the morning - at about the same time that most night club revellers return home - the City of Cape Town has urged all road users to exercise mutual courtesy and consideration.
“The cycling season has begun and hundreds of cyclists are out training at the break of dawn to avoid peak hour traffic,” says Principal Inspector Merle Lourens, spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services.
“School and university holidays will soon be in full swing, resulting in greater numbers of party-goers using the city’s roads at the same time. In response to increased traffic volumes during this ‘red eye’ period, the City plans to step up its road blocks across the metropole.
“To ensure the safety of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, Cape Town Traffic Services has achieved excellent results with its night-time and weekend road blocks, vehicle check points and daily patrols. These are complemented by additional interventions by Metro Police and SA Police Services,” says Lourens.
“But even with the best law enforcement in the world, it is still up to the individual road user to adhere to traffic laws and to practice common courtesy and vigilance at all times.
“Cyclists should ride single file in traffic, stop at all red lights, use hand signals for turns and lane changes and wear bright or reflective clothing - especially when visibility is poor. By the same token, motorists should respect the rights of cyclists and allow bicycles their space on the road,” says Lourens.
The Pedal Power Association (PPA), which represents about 17 000 cyclists, has welcomed the City’s plan to introduce more roadblocks at dawn.
“Our preliminary statistics show that a large proportion of cyclists have been killed or injured in the earlier hours of the morning,” says Steve Hayward, Chairman of the PPA and the Cycle Tour Trust.
“Unfortunately this is the time when a lot of irresponsible drivers are leaving the nightclubs too. Many are under the influence or are simply tired from partying all night.
“We welcome the new Western Cape Liquor Bill, which bans the serving of alcohol after 02h00, as this may go a long way to prevent inebriated drivers being on the road at dawn,” says Hayward.
The PPA is currently collating statistics on the locations of accidents involving cyclists and drunk drivers, which they will correlate with the accident data system of Cape Town Traffic Services.
Hayward urged cyclists to avoid riding alone, and to always carry emergency information with them such as details of the next of kin, medical aid number and blood group.
According to the PPA, popular cycling routes include the Main Road from Woodstock to Simon’s Town, Lakeside to Fish Hoek, Liesbeeck Parkway, Sea Point to Hout Bay, Camps Bay to Sea Point, the Klipfontein corridor, Marine Drive, Boundary Road, Koeberg Road and the Otto du Plessis Drive to Melkbosstrand.

Annual General Meeting.
Wed 19/11/2008
I am privileged to be the one to welcome all of you to this our first AGM as a fully fledged Cycling Club.
The time has flown. To think that a year has passed since we lodged our application to the WPCA to be accepted as members.
To date we have in excess of 100 paid up members. Not too shabby for a start.
For me the past year has been challenging, exciting and a privilege to have worked with an outstanding committee.
Much was achieved this past year.
Herewith a brief summary of what we were involved in as a club and what was accomplished.
The club was divided into two distinct sections namely;
The Social side known as the Wannabees and
The Mr. Price sponsored Developement (schools and juniors)/Elite Racing side.
A. The Social side incorporating the following Portfolios;
1. Road Section
2. MTB section
3. Safety Section
4. Clothing portfolio
5. DC section
John Arnold heading up this portfolio. The proud owner of no fewer than 5 DC teams. An incredible achievement. Backed up by no fewer than 6 x Team Captains.
a. The Slow Spokes Team Captain Wendy
b. The C2H Social Team Captain John Arnold
c. The Wannabee Faster Team Captain Henri Meier
d. The Wannabee Better Team Captains Petie Viljoen/Anton de Freitos
e. The CCHW Team Captain Henning ably supported by Jurie
A tremendous amount of dedication, organizing and commitment by the above and their team members. Have a great and safe ride.
6. Finance/Admin
Managed by Anton and supported by Nico, the Rules and Regulations guru.
7. Club Secretary
Charles Nesbitt a man that needs no prodding.
8. IT
Non other than Michel de Clippel. Michel who introduced us to the wonders of THE BLOG and has even better ideas for the new year.
Club Race
Being part of the WPCA we had to host a Fun Ride or MTB ride.
This opportunity became Nico and Marilettes project. What an example set by Father and daughter!
We opted for a Kermesse type of race which was held in and around Raithby. A tremendous success and accolades to all those who were involved.
B. The Mr. Price Sponsored RTeam.
The team members did us proud. During the course of the year making many appearances on the winner’s podium.
Taking part in the Giro and finishing a credible 12 out of I think 28 teams is no mean achievement.
Many thanks to Mr. Price for their contribution and major sponsorship.
I think it important to mention of the disappointments experienced by a few or the club members, their overcoming the set backs and currently all back in the group.
We think of Elsa Swart, Loureen , Pieter Schoeman, Jurie, Michelle, Paul Lewin and Nigel Bates.
This evening we are going to appoint a new Chairman, Vice Chairman, Safety Portfolio head and Social Section head.
I ask that the new committee be supported as the current committee has been supported in this past year.
New energy, new ideas, new direction and a new commitment will be forthcoming from the new incumbents which can only bode well for the club down the road.
The game has changed. Several years ago one was content to prepare for the Argus and the Sanlam Burger.
Today there are many more challenges in the cycling scene. The Cape Epic, Sani 2 Sea and and and. To think that one could come out of hibernation and start preparing for something and be up to speed dan sit jy die pot mis.
We are all a lot smarter and knowledgeable. Sport Science labs doing V02Max testing. The wealth of information available, covering all the fronts, namely Nutrition, Supplements, Equipment, Injuries and so on.
We are truly privileged and blessed.
In closing from my side, many thanks to all of you for the support given to us this past year.
Last but by no means least let’s say thank you to all the sponsors.
Hannes Pretorius, Nico van Rensburg, Herman van Zyl, PPA, Clive Hewitt, Alf Robinson, and then the bike shops; Maverick, Masons, Flandria, HCW(CCH sponsor) and Mr. Price. Last but not least Fabi (both Fabi and Mr. Price also CCH club sponsors)
What about all the others not mentioned here, giving of their valuable private time (man hours) unconditionally? Many, Many thanks!!
Yours,
ek

Middag,
Less than a week to go for the BIG ONE and that’s the Double Century out at Swellendam. Lets all hope that the route will be ok. The inclement weather during the last week or so, creating havoc, and causing much damage in those areas.
We had great turnouts this w/end. The excellent weather making it a pleasure to be out on the road. Sadly, we had a slight mishap with Arthur taking a tumble this morning. Nothing too serious I hope.
We had another mugging/robbery/hijacking on Sat morning near Kyamandi, just outside Stellenbosch. Two cyclists were attacked by three!@#$%^7 and got away with a bike and valuables. (So I am led to believe)
The need to remain acutely aware of what’s happening around you on the roads remains PARAMOUNT. Never train alone in suspect areas and for that matter never ever train alone!! (In fact a min of 3 should be the norm)
There are NO guarantees. Never take anything for granted period!!!
What about this Pepper Spray goed? Shouldn’t we maybe all consider having something like that available and handy? Remember in a previous mail, I referred you to Jehan Uren who sells the product which fits perfectly on the bike. (Strand Guns – 021 853 7231)
This coming Wednesday we are having our first AGM as a new club. Venue is the Methodist Church Coronation Ave, 6.30pm sharp, duration 1 HR.

Hi All,
Sunday late afternoon, blustery s/easter. Time once again to remind many, of the following.
DC in two weeks time. Taper time. Time to reflect once again on the road less travelled by many. The old adage applies and that is “when the going gets tough the tough start training” Lets hope that this has been the case for all the Wannabee teams for the past several months.
Bike needs to be sorted out. I mentioned this several weeks ago. Set up the service with your preferred dealer where ever. Niggly little things maak reg! Make sure that u have new tubes and tyres and if you are in the bucks like Hertzel sommer buy a new bike for the event.
Time to make sure that u start boosting your immune system. Don’t want griep of soiets at number 99. Speak to a GP or Chemist. Take that little bit extra vitamin wise. Drink lots of Castle Milk Stout I’m led to believe it’s good for you.
Clothing is important. The green sock for the left foot and the blue sock for the right foot. Brings you oodles of luck. Die regte fietsry broek. Die een met die shammy wat lekker sit en nie skaaf nie.
Supplements that are so crucial and important. All those Boere rate that u have tried and tested that give u that much needed boost when u hit the wall and still have 40ks to go.
Just remember please that if and when u start popping those Gu’s that u DRINK LOTS OF WATER or u are going to seize up and cramp. They are highly concentrated .
And the MIND. Visualization. Rerun the training rides veral die goeies. Jy is mos fiks en reg vir die ding. Legs are up to speed, u have exceeded last years prep and have done plenty more QUALITY work. Great team around u to support u and much camaraderie.
What more can one ask for???
Any questions don’t hesitate to ask.
Weeks training;
Mon 10/11 REST
Tues 11/11 West rd plus 80% Lactic zone 8 x 2 min intervals
Wed 12/11 Rest/Recovery Small blade
Thurs 13/11 Blue zone
Frid 14/11 REST
Sat 15/11 2/3hrs LSD
Sun 16/11 “
Well maybe also time for those that havn’t done a VO2 Max test to do so.
U can contact Andrew Smith on tel no 072-970-4452 at the US Sport Science centre and arrange a test. Tell him that u are a Wannabee and train with me.
Have a great week.

Hi,
Morning. Eventful past week.
Training during the week on course and for that matter the w/end as well. Routing having to be changed because of the weather but pretty good turnouts for both Sat and Sun DC training rides.
Road race out at Bonnievale on Sat which is normally pretty well supported and then yesterday some went and competed in the OFM classic of so iets.
Two club members Alex and rk tried their luck in die Vrystaat. Boetie got away with the break and at about 30ks to go went down in a group fall in the breakaway group, about six or so riders. Bad injuries to some but he managed to finish in about 2hrs 37 or so.
Moolman Welgemoed team Daikin, competed in Bonnievale on Sat, chased back to DF Malan, flew to Jan Smuts, took a car to Bloem raced on Sunday in the OFM classic and won the vets section. Moet gedoen word né!!!!!!
Die game is nie vir sissies nie. Baie tyd, baie geld en baie vasbyt.
This week weather permitting;
Mon 3/11 REST
Tues 4/11 West rd 11 x 2min intervals 80% plus lactic zone
Wed 5/11 REST/Recovery ride. Small blade 1hr

Greetings to all,
Hallo almal,
A bit of a change. Spent some time on the mines a couple of centuries ago.
For those that are proficient in a black language forgive me for the pigeon version of yesteryear although im led to believe that it is still the lingo up in the mines up north
At that time there of course was a language common to all spending their free time underground called Fanakalo, meaning “just like that” A lingo that made communication easy for all concerned. From RSA right up to Malawi and sadly now no longer in use on the mines (Locally) because it was something that developed during the Separate dev days.
A great past weeks training in the bank.
Good turnouts for the start of the w/day training sessions and getting lighter by the week. Nippy though.
Sats turnout below par because many were planning to do a long DC ride on Sunday. Julle moenie --offies wees nie. Even a short ride the day before will be beneficial. There is a school of thought amongst all the GURUS in the sports world that it’s in fact imperative to switch on the computer the day before a big event or an extended training ride otherwise the legs are no good.
Menigmaal al bewys dat dit so is!!
Just a reminder to all the DC Teams and that is that it’s compulsory to ride in the Wannabee/C2H cycling top on the day of the event. No top no ride. If u don’t have/cant afford then lend one from somebody for the day. Plenty available so there is no excuse. Team caps maak seker.
Fun ride out at Milnerton today. No wind no climbs and pretty short- 80 odd ks. Ended in a bunch sprint. C2H doing well again. Alex and rk coming in 3rd and 4th with the same time- foto finish for the first 4 places im led to believe.
Well week 2 of 4 for the DC and Burger;
Weather permitting;
Mon 27/10 REST
Tues 28/10 West Rd Lactic Zone plus 80% 10 x 2min intervals

Hi,
Just experienced a bit of an early morning shower. Amazing how rain not only makes everything greener but also tends to bring out many “sweet” (for lack of a better word) smells/aromas.
Pretty busy past w/end. DC training groups out, local fun ride scene on the go Sat (Durbanville) and for some a trip up to Ladismith to do the Seweweekspoort MTB ride. Let’s not forget the Amashovashova up in Durbs where I’m sure a few locals were present.
Speaking of the Durbs race; Moolman Welgemoed from Team Daiken(WP) won the 35-40 age group cat and once again proved that u can still be highly competitive no matter how old u are.
The DVille fun ride on Sat won by C2H Mr Prices RK.
Erna and I were fortunate enough to be able to partake in the Seweweekspoort MTB ride and what a fantastic, well organised and scenic route it was. Not technical but tough, especially for the slower riders later in the day when temps start climbing. Quite a few locals were there. Jack Cushencarrier, Bonte, Stephan, Julian and Henning to name a few.
Of the main manne were there of course, those being Kevin Evans and David George. Hel maar hulle kan ry!!! We were only ¾ ters way up the poort en daai manne was al oppad finish line toe.
About 700riders and I think a record entry. M—se inspuiting for the locals. Unbelievable hospitality en gasvryheid. Blyplek se tariewe nog ongelooflik billik. B &B at R120/person plus ‘n TV in die kamer.
So leer ‘n mens as jy fietsry.
Well this week sees the start of the traditional weekday training rides. Once again everyone is welcome. Lets kickstart as follows;
This week (weather permitting) 20/10/2008;
Mon 20/10 Rest
Tues 21/10 West Rd Lactic zone plus 80% of max 8 x 2min intervals
Wed 22/10 Rest/ Recovery ride 1hr small blade
Thur 23/10 W/works? Blue zone minus 80% 4 x P/House
Frid 24/10 Rest
Sat 25/10 Fun Ride/DC ride social group ride 3/4hrs
Sun 26/10 “””
Remember. W/day start time 5.30am Waterstone for 1 x HR
Weekends 6.00am “ as planned/called

Good day all,
Two Buzz mails out in one day, there must be something up. Not really just a bit of an update re---- cycling times.
As from this weekend (Sat 18/10) the w/end morning rides will start at 6.00am from Waterstone Village parking area. Usual place.
The weekday morning sessions (oude gewoonte Tuesday, Wed and Thursday) will be starting next week the 21/10 at 5.30am. Training for 1 hr. Meeting at Waterstone.
Almal is welkom.
Just remember lights are still a priority, front and back.
The miles have been done. Time to do a bit of interval and hill work. Remember it’s all centred around your heart rate and lactic threshold zone. Drae die strep and make sure the computer is working, otherwise u are only bluffing yourself.
Don’t forget your kopskerm and make sure (guys) that your cycling pants are not inside out otherwise u will become a member of the HJ Broek Club.
Not clear? Contact me.
Regards,

Hi,
“Silence is golden they say but my eyes still see”, remember the song of yesteryear. I haven’t been silent just a little bit slack. Things have been happening for the good and bad.
The racing scene is on the boil, up country “PRO” teams invited down to show the locals how it’s done and with great sponsors coming to the party. One couldn’t really ask for more but alas the hiccups still abound.
Well, as far as C2H is concerned we are nearing the end of our first club year and with that, the traditional AGM is what closes/starts the clubs cycling calendar.
The AGM is scheduled for Wednesday the 19/11/08, 6.30pm at the Methodist Church Coronation Ave S/West and we would like “ALMAL” to be there.
It’s the time for everyone to take part in securing the future of the club. Your input and vote concerning issues is very, very important. Without “you”, the club member, there would be ZIP, ZERO, NOTHING.
The club is strong financially, membership growing by the day and lots of exciting things in the pipeline scheduled for the new season.
A new look committee with brand new ideas , innovative ideas, doing away with those that have reached their “Sell By date” can only bode well for the future of the club.
I will be stepping down as chairman and will be more than ably replaced by Danie Morkel. (Danie has made himself available for the next term of office). Anton has made himself available as Vice Chairman and we will need to nominate and appoint someone to head the Safety Portfolio as well.
If there are any other nominees for the abovementioned portfolios or anything that you as a club member would like to be put on the agenda please notify Charles Nesbitt before next week Monday(20/10/08) so that we can distribute such in the next Buzz. (charlesnesbitt@woolworths.co.za)

Hi,
Morning I trust that u are all well. Struggling to get to terms with the weather, one day magic, the next lekker winter again. Like a bad dose of flu, just can’t shake it off.
Things are starting to pick up again. Tail ending the winter MTB program and the start of the spring road league/fun rides. Have had three so far, one in Worcester and the last two w/ends been in the DVille area.
Most people coming out of slumber with the exception being the MTB cyclists and those training for the DC and, quite a few vets who competed in the World vets champs. (Worth mentioning again)
Staying on this subject. Unbelievable results coming from several of our CT vets, Moolman Welgemoed coming 5th in the 35-39 cat and David Garrett a credible 10th place in the 30-34 cat. Needless to say they are the top riders in the WCape at the moment.
Sadly our cycling (Elites and others on occasion) seems to be marred with a continuous clash with the commisaires. Something is drastically out of kilter and it needs to be addressed sooner than later. Out of the three events having taken place so far two have had incidents and yesterdays’ sadly called off with about 20ks to go.
I was backing up and was about 100meters off the back of the pack and at no stage felt that there was undue/unnecessary bad cycling. That’s my view point and if anybody in the cycling fraternity has safety as a ‘not negotiable priority’ it’s yours truly.
SO WHAT WENT WRONG????????????
Yesterday’s event also ended up in a clash with a Duathlon taking place on the last climb going into DVille. How on earth can two events be competing on the same road? Another hiccup in the system.
What’s up messrs PPA??
One just has to refer to today’s Die Burger to see what a state the cycling per se is in. Sponsors are coming second best and the poor event organisers are not happy and rightly so.
There were several other issues that sent cold shivers down my spine. (and let me make it very clear that there are many that are not ignorant to what’s going on) I don’t want to let this BUZZ be a bitching session but I need to emphasise the fact that we have to be PROACTIVE and NOT REACTIVE in decision making.
All the relevant parties must get together and sort out the grey areas. (ppa, comm. and Cyclists). Too much time effort and money is spent on something that needs to be enjoyed and promoted positively as opposed to a negative attitude and approach.
Enough said--------ACTION!!
Would appear that the DC training is going off well. Five teams are still up and running.
Just remember that it’s still pretty dark in the mornings so we all still need lights and HEY its no good having lights, very bright lights, but they are pointing down on the road and are not visible.
Kop hou manne en meisies. Team effort.
Welcome to several new members I hope u enjoy the club.
Talk to u all soon.
Remember the clubs AGM scheduled for Wed 19/11/008.

Hi,
Pretty busy w/end.
DC/Social
A big turnout on Sat with perfect conditions. Several DC teams out training the coastal road way and to cap it all the gentle giants of the sea frolicking in the Gordon’s Bay area. Privileged and blessed is just putting it mildly. Added to the fact that I had Hertzel Brodovcky and Danie Morkel to keep me company. Can one ask for more??
Sunday a bit inclement. Pretty strong N/Wester but once again the manne and ladies were out doing their thing.
According to Danie the MTB outing up in the Grabou area went off well with an excellent turnout. Mooi so! Many thanks to HWC for assisting and setting up the fantastic venue and ride.

Morning to all,
Just when we thought we were about to enter spring we get behoorlik geklap with a few cold fronts. A blessing for a few but for many a nightmare. In-adequate shelter or homeless. Spare a thought for them.
Not much to report other than we managed to get a ride in on Sat down in the Bot River valley area. A few die hards turned out for a road ride on Sat and Sunday as well.
Coming back to the Bot River valley area. A fantastic place to be this time of the year. A beautiful valley and easy MTB riding on the gravel roads. One has many options and can meander on several optional situations pending how much time u want to spend out there.
Dit kos niks other than a coffee, koekies tert of ontbyt with Tannie Elreda should one wish to. Many have met her with us on our meanderings.
Erna and I went out on sat but the inclement weather made us decide to do a u turn after 12ks or so. Just at the start of the pass about 15ks from Bot River theres a turnoff to the right to a place called Porcupine Hills.
We took a chance, ducked down the dirt road and whalla! met up with Murry the owner of the place. Magnificent setting. Restaurant, kroeg and bungalow,s in a beautiful area. A life saver. Pot of coffee, home made bread and appelkoos konfyt, egter botter good music en geselskap. What more could one ask for. Die koue, and the fact that we were sopping wet was forgotton.
Needless to say we flew back with the 40ks plus N/wester pushing us. If you have never been out there its just over half an hour from S/West and well worth the go look see bet or give Murry a call on 028-2849066.
Chances are good that I will be setting something up in the near future. Breakfast MTB ride of soiets. Will keep u posted.
Still on the MTB scene. The club will be out this Sunday at the Grabouw/Elgin C/Club for a ride. Sponsored by HCW and backed up by Danie and co.
Start time at the gate; 7.30am
Time duration; 1. Med to fast groups 4 – 4.5hrs
2. Slow group 2 – 2.5hrs
Grouping will take place based on fast med or slow and what distances u wish to ride. U will have the option to turn back after completing the South loop. After completing the South loop those wishing to, will continue to the Nuweberg loop.
Terrain; Sandy wet jeep track for most of the course but with areas of pretty technical single track.
Don’t forget; Rain gear, enough to eat and drink on your ride, tools necessary for the ride, Chain breaker, tubes, pomp etc.
Costs; R20 to enter the Country Club (for all) plus R30 for non C2H club members
Well, pretty shortly we will be starting the Spring PPA fun rides. This in turn will help to raise the fitness levels of all those training for the DC.
We have a Steering comm. meeting scheduled for this coming Monday. Anything relevant that comes out of it we will inform u.
Enjoy,

As you all know the Cycle Safe Committee is running a Cycle Safe Project at our local primary schools. We are aiming our program to grade 4 learners and we hope to make our kids cycling safer on our roads when they travel to school.
There are 8 schools and more or less 600 of our youngsters taking part. This is a huge achievement for C2H and the Cycle Safe Committee and we are putting a lot of effort to make this Cycle Safe Project a success. We are starting end of September and hope to finish around mid of October.
But we need your help! If you can take a couple of hours off your busy time and join us on one of these mornings you will help our kids to become safe cyclists. Any wannabee can contact Petie 0823233502 or Michel 0826942011 or drop a email to helderbergcyclesafe@gmail.com. We are looking forward to a fantastic support from the wannabees for this ambitious project.
Kind regards

Hi,
Had to change the intro from yesterday to this morning. Yes its trying to rain. Lekker koel nie koud and an earthy wet soil smell.
Well what’s to report?
DC
Two DC teams were out and about this past w/end. The Social team on Sat doing a plus 100ks and I Andre’s team on Sunday.
Time slowly but surely ticking away and not that many w/ends left to get up to speed.
Would appear that John has five teams up and running. Fantastic if we can realise this on the day.
Club Race day
One couldn’t have asked for better weather conditions. Coupled with the fact that we weren’t starting at sparrow(time slot was allocated to us), a beautiful scenic setting, an exciting 4k cycle route going thru a scenic little Boland suburb, and a group of “Workers/Officials” that made it happen.
For those of u that weren’t there, for whatever reason, u were without a doubt the losers.
The racing was excellent, from the youngsters to the Elites.
The turnout was just what we needed. Not knowing what to expect and how the roads and route would accommodate the faster riders it turned out just perfect.
We now have a pretty good idea of where we can improve and what bunches we can handle. All bodes well for the future.
Sad though that we did not have the support that one would have expected from the local cyclists and even more so from our club. Maar nou ja, so leer jy mense ken. What’s in it for me? And yes everyone, I’m well aware of the fact there was MTBiking taking place and that we all have different priorities; but to support your club for the only event they host once a year, is that asking too much??
While I’m on a roll let me make use of this opportunity to thank all the sponsors namely;
Fabi, Herman van Zyl; Flandria; Maverick; Masons; HCW; Mr. Price; Hannes Pretorius; Mikes TV Repairs and all the volunteers for your unselfish contribution
and/or time.
And last but not least many thanks to our announcer Hendrikus Lemmer, (ek hoop djy het djo tip gekry)

Olympics
Natalie coming a credible 16th in the 10k swim. One silver medal with the possibility of several more. Not over until the fat lady sings. Let’s be positive.
Controversy rages. Unbelievable the number of records broken especially in the swimming events. Was it?
1. the deeper pool -1m
2. The open lanes on either end
3. The temp of the water
4. Special lane barriers
5. or the special material used for the swim gear
6. Special guttering
7. And then of course Phelps and his so called “underwater work come 5th stroke”
Phelps himself alla Lance Armstrong just didn’t happen on the scene. He’s been around for quite a while. Taking into account that at the age of 15yrs and some months he was the youngest swimmer ever to break a world swim record.
One just has to go back to LAs book “Its not about the bike” read the first few chapters to see where he came from and what it took to make it. Theres nothing for nothing and NO free lunches
Talking about records. Questions being asked as to why the likes of Bolt doesn’t finish his race. Looks around at 90m very casually and slows down for the last 10m still breaking the record. Of course, it’s all about money.
The big money payout is in the Golden League events. So little by little with breaking that record= more payouts. But what a chance one is taking. Another bite of the cake if all goes well and why not??? After all a record is a record. Of hoe??
How does one reward/compensate/accommodate someone when their tool of the trade namely your pole for the pole vault event has suddenly gone missing. You can’t compete and the responsible officials shrug their shoulders and walk away. Well it happened. Tragic to say the least.
Other
The light is starting to change for the better so we should be able to start earlier on w/ends. Will keep u posted.
Remember
1. To still have lights back and front and reflective/light clothing.
2. To make everyone aware of obstacles etc on the road whilst in a group
3. Spanners, spare tubes and a pomp that works
4. and the blog

Morning all,
I sense/smell a change in the air early in the mornings. No, its not that we now have six cats and two dogs in the room with us during the night, I’m talking about in the wee hours of the morning, on the stoep met die koffie en Louis (dis die trein en ons het al voorheen van Louis gepraat). Is it the first signs of spring or what?
Results;
Well what has happened the last week or two? We had the Nat Mazda MTB ride in Stellenbosch Sunday week ago and I’m led to believe with a record entry. Many Wannabee/C2H members took part with Anton getting a second in a Ladies Cat!!!!!! And the promising young Klara Rossouw coming a very credible third in the junior woman’s cat over 41ks. Wel gedaan.

MTB:
Well, we had another successful MTB ride this past Sunday. Danie and his team did an awesome job in controlling and looking after in excess of 30 keen, enthusiastic and very determined MTB riders.
The odd tumble, getting lost, doing a hike, making it all that much more exciting and challenging. Mooi so manne.
In the future, we (Cycling Club Helderberg) hope and plan to have more sponsors on board hosting similar MTB rides.
We will keep u informed re the next ride.
Safety;
Michel de Clippel still looking for help:

Hallo,
Strange to think that we are well on our way to Xmas. Couple of days and its August then into spring and bingo its funny time again. Scary!!
Well it’s life after the TDF. Even if there was some disappointment re the drug sit I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
The old adage applies. New faces, new places and new cases.
Well what’s happening in the club I was asked the other evening? Strange to say the least. I was under the impression that we were/are a vibrant, proactive (not reactive) innovative, go getter club to put it mildly and have the following on the go;
- DC—stands for Double Century; 4 x teams up and running(I think—am I correct Henry/Andre) and of course we might even have a 5th team pretty shortly—Jurie’s team.
John doing a great job handling this portfolio.
The team caps are;
a. Wendy’s team—the social team
b. John’s team
c. Andre’s team
d. Henri’s team
e. And hopefully Jurie’s team - Safety Comm --- These are the girls and guys that strive to keep cycling safe with “out reach” training programmes in place being presented to the primary schools in the Basin area. Much work to be done here and volunteers are urgently needed to assist in the running thereof. Those that can help please contact Michel de Clippel on 082-6942011. Many thanks. Refer attached below
- Annual Club Road race. This to be hosted by us on the 17th of August. Great work being done by all the comm. members. Without exception people have put there hands up and I can only see us hosting an awesome event in just over two weeks time. Comm. members have all volunteered for duty on the day but we still need quite a few to help with the marshalling. Those that can help please contact Volkie on 083-453 0057. By voorbaat dankie.
All the details will be going out shortly but in a nutshell;
It’s in the form of a Kermesse, 4.2367ks long. The loop starts at Helderberg Co-op turns left into the Raithby Rd back down onto the Winery Rd back past the Co-op. Maklik nĂª!! All categories will be catered for.
What we need is everyone to be there to support the effort and of course if u are not working / helping then u may enter and ride. - And then of course we have the social w/end road rides taking place every Sat and Sun weather permitting and Danie(gp) who is now handling our MTB portfolio. When he has rides taking place I will let u all know. Great guy is Danie very experienced. Several Epics under the belt and to crown it all a super personality. Julle moenie worry nie, hy sal djulle entertain!!!
5. Remember!!!
a. Safety, safety en nogmaals safety—not negotiable
b. W/end rides Sat and Sun. Meet Waterstone Village @ 7.00am
c. Volunteers needed. Please respond.
d. Club Ride. Diarise 17/8/08. Where:? Helderberg Co-op @ 10.00am

STUNNING SENIOR MOMENT A very self-important college freshman attending a recent football game, took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation. 'You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one,' the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. 'The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon, our spaceships have visited Mars. We have nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers with light-speed processing and,' pausing to take another drink of beer. The Senior took advantage of the break in the student's litany and said, 'You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were young........so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little shit, what are you doing for the next generation?'The applause was resounding..I love senior citizens

Hi everyone,
Winter time, recovery time for most I would imagine. The Die Hards are out there but sensible mense stay in bed if the weather is inclement.
Well on that subject. The Freedom Challenge has just been completed. Must probably the extreme of extremes re endurance. Pretty much a Triathlon split into the Comrades, a 2300k off road mtb ride and then a bitterly cold and wet Berg River canoe marathon. Not for the faint hearted.
We in our midst have Erol Derick (I’m sure most of u know him, a humble Maverick man) who competed in the cycle leg of the race. (U can do it in sections). About 2300ks off road with a cut off of 26 days. No tents to sleep in, no mechanic waiting patiently for u to come and service your bike, no masseurs at hand and and and. Net djy alleen. Something to think about die menere ne!
Well life carries on. Not too long ago many took part in the Knysna Fest. The weather was kind to us and I saw quite a few Wannabees/C2H mense there.
It remains a favourite on the cycling and running calendar.
The school hols are a thing of the past. Back to the grind stone and most things return to normal. I would imagine that the DC groups will start their long training rides again.
We as a club (as I have mentioned before) have a club race pegged for Sunday the 17th of August. We have applied for the relevant permission and have most things in place. The race will be a type of Crit , a 4.2k loop oround Raithby ( If and when we get the off go ahead).
We intend catering for virtually all cats and age groups and it should be great fun. We will keep u informed. But please keep the day open. It’s our event and we would like as many there as possible.
Remember!!!
Safety is not negotiable
Pieter has the new club kit available
Our race day
Starting times are at 7.00am Waterstone parking Sat, Sun and public hols.
Congrats to young Dean Graham who took part in the SA inter prov champs. A great exp and learning opportunity.

Hi All,
Well if there is any doubt about winter having arrived I think it was dispelled this past Saturday.
Pretty good turnout what with Wendy and her merry DC span just about at full strength raring to go and then of course the traditional Die Hards. Pretty chilly with a prediction of 30% chance of PLEK PLEK reën. Die ou Transvaal, Springbok Radio news on weather gesegte.
Sadly Wendy (after a call going the coastal road and all of us men telling her “not a good idea”) has handed in her resignation. Effective from the first of December of course after the DC of course. What a delightful soaking wet and cold ride we had. But hey if u want to stay with Wendy’s team u have to be tough. No place for the feint hearted. Let me tell u that even Paul Lewin hacked it out in the rain. Maybe Paul is just generally more sensible on the occasion.
Well, this coming w/end many I suppose, will be making there way up to the Knysna area if u can afford the petrol costs that is. Traditionally a great w/end. The MTB ride on Sat and the RR on Sunday. Plenty to do over the w/end. Enjoy and have a safe trip.
We have had a mishap or two these past couple of weeks. BJ coming down after hitting a tar obstruction and Pieter staking claim to a piece of turf on a downhill section at Thandi. Both up and running I trust and hope.
Would appear that we have a bike shop up for sale and at the same time a bike shop that is soon going to open its doors. Coincidence? Wonder maar net.
Speak to Hertzel.
Must be something happening out there that I am not aware of in the cycling business. Could it be the petrol price? The vehicle market is struggling as we all know so maybe, just maybe, it’s going to be a boom time for the cycling industry. Let’s hope so.
Safety en nogmals Safety.
Taking into account the amount of cyclists that have ridden with us in groups and the man hrs x years (or should it be bike hours) that we spent on fixed routes its quite incredible how few incidents we have had.
Accolades to all of u.
In saying that just a word of caution to everyone when we do the Rooiels run. As one hits the coastal road the drainage area and little bit of safety margin that we have there is actually fraught with danger.
U will all have noticed the drainage holes on the left going out. U will have also noticed the grid and how the pipe work is running parallel to the road. Manne en meisies if one of us hit that drain at 20/30 or what ever kilos per hour it’s going to be nag. Be very very mindful of these drainage points. We did try and get them changed right in the beginning maar het gefaal.
We also have several on the way back to Waterstone. Two come to mind and I ALWAYS signal them. The one on the turn/corner intersection of Broadlands and the Coastal road and the other turning left off the R44 into main road going back to Waterstone.
Well what do the experts have to say this week?
They say its winter time-- Wet weather time. Towards the bottom of the saddle down tube most of us have a water bottle cage and of course very important we have a PUMP. Many is the occasion when I have had to stop and help a person and I have found that both my pump and the other persons pump doesn’t work. How often do we check these tools of ours? About time we started doing something about it.
Pretty easy according to the experts. Make sure the pump works. Then--- either GLAD WRAP the PUMP or put it into a PLASTIC Bag. All the mud, muck and water is thus prevented from getting into the PUMP, and of course the PUMP is very grateful. Simple hey. Let’s see how many PUMPS are looked after.
Attached something to think/chuckle about.
Have a great week,
Ek

Morning,
Not much to report on at this point in time. Typical of the Winter period.
This past w/end saw very few on the road on Sat and about 15 or so brave the coldish elements on Sunday.
I suppose the target for many will be the Knysna festival which takes place early in July. The one w/end hosting the MTB and RR and the next w/end the runners/joggers having fun.
The DC teams slowly filling up and it looks as if there will be four full teams again. Great stuff.
Erica Green our own local cycling guru has been appointed as the team mgr for the New Zealand junior team to take part in the world champs later this year in RSA(July). Erica is looking for help. She is in need of about 4/5 sets of rollers that she can use with the team. If anybody out there can help u can contact her on daisyglug@iafrica.com.
We had our customary monthly Steering com meeting last night with decisions been made on several issues. I will keep u up to date once I have received the minutes.
Dates were pegged for the balance of the year and I know it’s a bit early but u can diarise the 19th of Nov for the AGM. And yes we would like almal to be there. We have pegged the date now, knowing that later on all the Xmas functions start coming up and then its vakansie nĂ©.
It would appear that we will be hosting a Club MTB ride this Sunday. Meeting place Coetzenberg parking area next to the Athletics track. Time 7.30am . Non club members will be liable for a fee of R30 and club members free. An entry fee of R20.00 for all to enter Jonkershoek. Duration of ride 2/2.5hrs. Bietjie geld ook vir die muffin en engelse verdriet.
Safety still being our no 1 concern herewith a tip from the EXPERTS once again.
Helmets.
We all know No helmet No ride.
We all know that it is illegal to in fact cycle without a helmet.
But what is of cardinal importance as well is ;
a. The helmet must be without any cracks and in good condition and
b. The chin strap must in fact be secure with NO/VERY LITTLE slack under the chin. Its pointless wearing a helmet but not securing the strap clips(as I have seen many cyclists do) and or alternatively securing the strap but with too much slack in the strap. In other words should u fall the helmet will move on ground impact and NOT protect the head as it should.
c. According to the EXPERTS and stats available. 70/80% of cycling deaths are due to head injuries.
d. There is evidence that wearing protective helmets reduces the risk of brain injury by 88%
Laat mens dink né!!!!.
That’s it. Have a great week.

The Race Across America is one of the most respected and longest running annual endurance events holding legendary stature the world over. It is one of the pinnacles of sporting accomplishment, globally seen as the highest rung of the ultra-endurance sports ladder. Since 1982, RAAM has a rich and storied history standing as a monument to human endeavors.
The Race Across America is an event so staggering that merely to finish is, for most, the accomplishment of a lifetime. RAAM inspires everyone that it touches. A monumental race contested with the utmost of sportsmanship and zeal. Truly, RAAM is larger than life. A breeding ground for champions, a testing ground for elite riders and a shining example of the strength of human spirit.
2008 General Race Information - the 27th Edition
Start: Oceanside, CA - The Oceanside Pier. Women June 7th, Men June 8th, Teams June 11th.
Finish: Annapolis, MD - The City Dock. June 17th - June 20th.
Route: More than 3,000 miles across the United States.
Divisions: Solo and Two-Person, Four-Person, and Eight-Person Teams.
RAAM is a Race of Truth
This is a Race. Unlike other famous races, like the Tour de France, RAAM is not a stage race. The race is one stage, live to the very end. In RAAM, once the clock starts on the west coast, the clock doesn't stop until each racer reaches the finish line on the east coast. RAAM is 30% longer than the Tour de France and racers finish in half the time with no rest days. The race format is essentially a time trial, commonly called racing against the clock or the race of truth. Unlike the Tour de France, there is no drafting or taking shelter from the wind. It's an all out solo challenge.
Solo and Team
The heart of the race is the Solo division. That is where the ultimate challenge lies. The race has team categories of 2-Person, 4-Person, and 8-Person teams. With an 8-Person team, each person averages three hours a day on the bike.
3,000 Miles
The route is over 3000 miles, touching 14 states and climbing over 100,000 feet. Teams typically cross the country in 6 to 9 days, averaging 350 to over 500 miles per day. Solo racers finish in 9 to 12 days, averaging 250 to 350 miles per day. Teams have a relay format and race 24 hours a day. Solo racers have the challenge of balancing a few hours of sleep each night against race deadlines.
Olympians, Grandfathers and You
The men and women who compete, as soloists or as team participants, are dedicated and driven athletes. The racers are comprised from an international field of professionals from all walks of life. Among them are Olympians, professional athletes, but, by far, most are just like you. They range in age from 18 to over 70 and each has a story to tell of their life and how they came to the race. That story is enriched during the week-long adventure across the country as each rises and discovers their inner ability.
Is it a Charity?
More than half of the racers use RAAM as a platform and event to raise funds for various charities. In 2007, racers raised more than $1,000,000.
Why RAAM?
Because it's there was George Mallory's answer, as to why climb Mt. Everest.
RAAM has a similar draw. At the very least, it's the honor of adding their name to the prestigious roll call of RAAM finishers.
RAAM is more than a bike race. It is about ordinary people being great. It's about realizing dreams, a journey of the heart and soul. It's about being the toughest of the tough. It's about camaraderie, teamwork, and the incredible RAAM family. It's about taking the stage for a charity or cause that matters, to raise awareness and funds. It's about the vastness, richness, beauty, and generosity of the United States of America and the people who live here. It's a lifetime experience never to be repeated.
The Race Across America endures due to its amazing effect on the human consciousness and for its incredible feats of willpower, inspiration, and heart.
Who's Behind RAAM?
The RAAM Management Team - Fred Boethling, Terry Zmrhal, Perry Stone and Rick Boethling - bring considerable breadth and depth of business and race experience to bear on the race. We are all race veterans. We've been there. We know what's in the hearts and minds of racers and crew.

Hi,
June the first. Mid year month, winter in all earnest just about here. About three and a half weeks to go then we start going positive to daylight time. Scary to say the least. As one gets older so the time seems to fly faster. I wonder if of u out there about my age are feeling the same? Vra maar net.
Seems like yesterday that I had just turned forty, cocky as hell, baie slim and other than needing a Grandpa from time to time (as opposed to a Grandpa and Panado now) I could take on anything. Dalk n bietjie wysheid wat nou intree of wat.
Well the group (rd) is still getting together at Waterstone weekends at 7.00 am. Hey all, it’s dark, so please lights and lights and light Wannabee clothing. Ek soek nie die Ruiters in die nag nie wat net swart aan trek.
I’m led to believe by Anton de Freitos that last Sundays MTB rides turnout was very good. About 30 plus of which the greater majority were non members. The club was ably assisted by HCW. Many thanks to them. There was a charge of R30.00 per head for non members. According to Anton the club made in the region of R700.00
On several occasions during the past years the Steering com has discussed payment for non members and once again 2 points come to mind.
Is it fair to those that are paid up members that others enjoy the privelages of the club with no contribution and;
Is it a priority to encourage and develop the sport in the belief that the non payers will eventually come to the party.
Maybe it is time to start charging non-members who join us for road rides on w/ends and also the midweek training sessions. Wat dink julle? Please let me know. Email me your comments. We can really start filling our coffers. Money makes the world go around of hoe?
The DC teams seem to be taking shape. Several teams have already had a couple of training rides. Would appear that there is still some place open in of the teams. If interested please contact John Arnold (DC event co-ordinator) on 082-5570-331
Just something interesting;

Using pink because today is the final day of a great Giro Del Italia. Is Contador the man?? Yes he is!!
Yesterday’s group ride was once again held up because of punctures. Time that we got the experts in again with advice when riding during the winter months.
What the experts say;
During the rainy season what tends to happen on the tar roads is that all the small broken pieces of glass get washed out of all the cracks and holes and STAND PROUD on the road surface. These small pieces of glass do not necessarily cause the puncture then, but they tend to become imbedded in the tyre and after several rides get pushed thru the tyre and so puncture the tube. Well what to do?.
1. The night before u ride do several things (a) Spin the wheels and check for small pieces of embedded glass in the tyres and remove of course; (b) Pump up your tyres to 8bar.
2. When u get up to ride the next morning check your tyre pressure again. Chances are good that u will have lost a bar or so. Pump up the tyres to 8bar again.
3. Whilst on the ride continually wipe off the front and back tyres (especially if the road is wet) this will prevent most of the small pieces of glass from seating themselves in the tyre. U can do this either with your GLOVED hands or the rear wheel with your shoe. Ask for a demo at the next ride. I’m sure any of the callers will be able to show u.
That’s it . Don’t forget the blog. http://www.wanna-b-team.blogspot.com/

Well a g
reat week-end we had weather-wise, those who capitalized on the great weather by getting out there on two wheels really scored! The Cycle Club Helderberg's first monthly MTB outride yesterday saw a great turn-out - thanks to everyone who attended and enjoyed a great morning out, including the fantastic riding that's out there waiting for each and everyone who wants to get out of bed a little earlier on a Sunday morning to enjoy our region and the fitness it will bring you. Those of you who don't know: depending on the attendance, the group is split into a fast, a medium and a beginner's group, and each group has someone looking after it. Bottom line: you will have buddies during any technical difficulty, and you won't get lost! The deal is to get you fitter, faster and technically more able during the next 6 months. - the next monthly MTB ride is on Sunday 15 June, so keep turning those legs for more fun next time!
