Hello to all the Wannabees

No news from Knysna yet. Please send some news to me. Need to know who did well and who did not do so well !!!

Still better than me because I am doing nothing

Interesting happened to me this week. While riding with Jack Ackerman over the highest hills as usual, found the pressure in my back brake hydraulic system to be missing and thus needless to say had to negotiate the down hills on my front brake.

After not finding any fault took the bike to the shop to look for a air lock or something, but turned out to be a perished brake cable lumen. This all from putting my bike on the bike rack with the cable between the rack and the bike

So beware, lookout for pressure on those cables when you transport your bike

The rest of the blog is as it was last week, so just note the part where we ask for help with our race.

Thanks

Ian Craig (wannabee member) is pleased to present a series of educational talks that will combine information on both training and nutrition and how best to balance the two for optimal performance.

Dear Wannebees,

Michael van Staden and myself have now presented most of this educational series at Cycle Lab in Milnerton. Its gone extremely well, so we’re now talking about doing it in other areas (for those who can’t make it into the city).

The next step I think will be the Helderberg and we would like to tell as many cyclists about it as possible to drum up a crowd of at least 10-20 on each evening. Michael (himself an elite rider) is very knowledgeable and experienced on the construction of training programmes (including power, heart rate and RPE–guided intensity) and I have built up a very real and practical way of presenting sports nutrition. It will be an excellent education opportunity for cyclists on this side of town.

Please let me know what you think. It would be good to get this going soon after the school holidays.

Best Wishes, Ian

Michael van Staden is a qualified level 3 power coach accredited by Training Peaksand is currently busy with level 2 and hopes to have completed that by the end of May 2009. Michael also has a certificate in the AB and C of sport science and Psychology. Michael also rides for a professional Cape Town based cycling Team and finished in 13th place in the 2008 Cape Argus cycle Tour at the age of 19; he is also the current U/23 road and Time Trial champion.

Ian Craig is an exercise scientist, nutritional therapist and NLP practitioner. He initially qualified as an Exercise Physiologist (MSc) and Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a knowledge-base that he applied into his own middle-distance running career plus the care of his Personal Training clients. His current focus, Nutritional Therapy (BSc) allows Ian to address the larger picture of health, with

considerations such weight management, digestive health, blood sugar regulation, overtraining and sporting performance. He runs three nutrition & exercise clinics, regular workshops on sports nutrition plus is a columnist for the ‘Go Multi’ triathlon magazine.

DATES: 4 evenings to be announced

Venue: to be announced

Cost: R100 per evening or R300 for all 4 evenings.

Drinks will be available.

1st day:

Michael – General training Principles. Understand the general training principles before you actually get the wheels turning.

Ian – Nutrition for Health and Training Support. Topics discussed include: blood sugar balance for stable energy levels; adequate protein for training adaptations; carbs – when to go high or low glycaemic; the good aspects of fats; nutrition individuality.

2nd day:

Michael – Periodisation. Structure and time your training to perfection for peak performance when you want it to count.

Ian – Nutrient Timing. Topics discussed include: the role of insulin in anabolic drive; what to eat/drink before during and after exercise to optimize performance during and recovery afterwards; carb loading; immune support.

3rd day:

Michael – Get the most out of your limited time. Do cyclists really need to do hours on the bike to do be competitive? Benefit from 90min a day and make it count!

Ian – Sports Drinks and Supplements. Topics discussed include: Dispelling the myths of sports products; sports drinks; recovery products; ergogenic aids for performance; nutrient support for health. Bring along your own products and have them analysed!

4th day:

Michael – Tracking changes in your fitness. Am I really getting better is what we all ask? How can we actually track it?

Ian – Overtraining. Topics discussed include: What is overtraining and how is it measured; stress hormones and catabolic drive; monitoring your stress levels; supporting your body through hard training.

Please let him know what you think. It would be good to get this going soon after the school holidays.

Cyclist shot with air rifle!

2009-06-23 08:43

Jackie Pienaar-Brink and Jan Gerber

Stellenbosch – Three men appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with an incident in which a cyclist was shot with an air rifle.

The shooting took place shortly after 08:00 on Saturday morning, as Francois Raath, 51, from Bellville, was cycling along Bottelary Road with a group of nine cyclists. He sustained a flesh wound to his right side.

Stellenbosch police spokesperson Aubrey Marais said Randal Vosloo, 20, and Ivan Jones, 38, were arrested that day while Laurentios van Niekerk, 23, was arrested on Sunday. All three men are from Kraaifontein.

The suspects had reportedly been visiting friends on the farm Bellevue, about 200m from where the shooting took place.

Charges

The men are facing charges of assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. They were released on bail of R300 each on Monday. The case has been postponed until July 1.

Raath is part of a group of cyclists who ride on Bottelary Road to Stellenbosch every Saturday, where they have coffee before returning home.

On Saturday morning, Raath was cycling alongside another cyclist – on the side of the road, but inside the yellow line – when a Mazda 323 narrowly scraped past them. The passenger door was merely an arm’s length away from Raath when he heard the shot.

The next thing he knew, there was a burning pain in his side.

“I’ve been shot! I’ve been shot!” he screamed.

When he lifted up his clothes, he could see blood around a wound in his side. He couldn’t feel a bullet, but there was a hole straight through his three layers of clothing.

In the midst of the confusion, Raath looked up and noticed the Mazda turning into Bellevue Road.

The group of cyclists rode to the farm gate where they waited for the police to arrive. Stellenbosch police were on the scene within 15 minutes, where they took the cyclists’ statements, said Raath.

Knocked off bicycles

Raath is one of two cyclists in the group who have been knocked off their bicycles by cars on the same road in the past.

“All of us are stunned and concerned. It almost makes you too scared to go for a ride,” he said.

“This is not the spirit of the sport. We ride inside the yellow line. We wear high-visibility clothing. We have lights on the front and back of our bicycles. What more can we do?”

Most members of the exec. Comm seems to have resigned

We will post the report on the BLOG

Letter from John

Dear All Members

The club is once again committed to hosting an annual race or alternatively face a heavy fine from WP Cycling. We will again host a kermesse type race using the same route as last year around Raithby. The date of the race is Sunday 9 August 2009.

In order to ensure the safety of all the cyclists we will need marshals at 7 stations around the route. As per last year we will divide the marshalling groups up into 2 sessions the first being from 08h45-12h00 and the second from 12h00-15h00. We will place a minimum of 2 marshals at each point.

Although the Wannabee members will be permitted and encouraged to enter the race itself, our first priority is to get enough marshals to assist on the day. Please will you either respond to me directly or to the club’s e-mail address confirming your availability as well requesting either session 1 or 2. If you wish to stand with anyone in particular please indicate this and where possible I will try and place people together.

As club members throughout the year we participate in various organised “fun-rides” so this is the one opportunity to give back and assist the cycling community so please give up just 3 hours of your time and help in the marshalling.

Kind regards

John Arnold

Another race

A Mountain bike race will probably also be organised by us somewhere in July.

We are short on details but will put on the BLOG as soon as we have clarity

MTB Club Ride

Next Tuesday 16th of June sees the 2nd MTB Outride of Cycling Club Helderberg taking place, starting at Die Boord Shopping Centre in Stellenbosch at 8h00 (please guys, we want to leave at 8h00). The route follows the hills from Papegaaiberg over to the end of Devon Valley (this is where the slow group takes a short cut back to Stellenbosch), and from there the medium group and the fast group will follow the hills in the direction of Zevenwacht, and return via the Uiterwijk road. The terrain is mainly farm jeep track through vineyards (1st half), with fynbos, rough jeep track, singletrack, slippery bits and good climbing prevalent in the 2nd half (medium group and fast group).

With all the rain that fell, see to it that your tyres have good tread (a more aggressive tread will certainly help) and that your bike is in good nick. We want to ensure that everyone enjoys the ride to its full potential! The complete route has a riding time of 2,5h (excluding stoppages), and a total climb of 785m. Everybody welcome, including non-members, who pay a R10 fee.

Hello to all the Wannabees

Update on the nationals that were held in Oudshoorn.

Richard de Vink came third and sixth respectively in the time trail and open race as a vet in the 50 to 55 category. Well done Richard

Hello to all the Wannabees

Die winter is hier in al sy Kaapse glorie.

I am sure the ‘die hards’ were out and doing their thing on the bikes where as most of us were just cuddled up and happy to see the rain.

Lekka watching the 7’ns BOKS and ‘die BULLE’ doing their thing from the comfort of my armchair.

The nationals were held in Oudshoorn. No formal results have reached me at time of writing, so please keep me informed.

Hou duim vas!

Fietsry groete,

Ina van Zyl

Herewith a note from PPA

BACK NUMBERS AT MTB EVENTS

Please remember to bring and wear your PPA seeded number at all events, including MTB events. If you forget your number at home, you'll have to buy a back number at the event (either R5 for an unseeded number or R30 for a seeded number).

Additionally, all riders who are not members of either PPA or any affiliate of Cycling South Africa, will in future have to pay a R30 day license fee to CSA for all MTB routes over 20km, and all road routes over 40km.

Herewith some other reminders and news.

The club rides will still be coordinated on Saturdays and Sundays with the new starting time 07h00 at W/Stone village centre.

Please ensure that you have good front and back lights on your bike. There are still some riders with very poor lights on their bikes.
