This 24hour mountain bike event revolves around a massive relay, where solo riders or teams of four riders compete to ride as many laps as possible in a 24-hour time frame. It is a very social event as it
builds camaraderie between teammates and riders with camping bringing everyone together. Well worth doing if you have not experienced this event before. The event also has a fun category for teams between 5-8 riders. The official categories for teams are : Open Men, Open Women, Open Mixed [at least 1 of both genders], Junior [aged between 16 and 18]. There is also a “One Four Zero” category – the collective ages of the 4 riders must be more than 140 years!Nigel Bates, Kim Lord, Gerhard Kruger and Anton de Freitas were the WINNERS of the "One Four Zero (Vets) category. The team covered 50 Laps (+- 400 km) in the 24hr period.
Solo Men (The real tough guys of our sport):
Winner (Chris van Zyl) completed 36 laps
Julian Conrad 5th 28 laps 224km
Henri Meier 8th 24 laps 192km
Theo Scribante 9th 23 laps 184km
Solo Women:
Winner (Hanlie Booyens) completed an amazing 33 laps
Hanri Human 3rd 16 laps (teacher at Paarl Valley HS)
Helderberg Cycle World won the Open Team Category with 52 laps
Hannes Pretorius managed a Paul Roos Team in the Juniour Team category which
included his son Frans. The team came 2nd in this category.If I have left anybody out I do apologise. Put this on your calendar for next year it is well worth the outing.
