1. BE ALERT
- Be aware and ride defensively.
- Be prepared to manoeuvre for safety.
- Beware of parked cars. The car could be about to pull out into the traffic, or someone could open a door.
- Watch for cars entering from driveways. Most bicycle collisions occur at intersections - be extra careful and always use hand signals.

2. BE SEEN
- Make sure that drivers can see you - make eye contact with them.
- Be predictable - signal your turns and point left or right.
- Use lights and reflective clothing when riding at night.

3. BE EQUIPPED
- Always wear a helmet.

4. BE SAFE
- Traffic signs and laws apply to cyclists too - obey them.
- Ride in single file on the left-hand side of the road.
- Ride at least one metre from the curb so you can move around road hazards.
- Do not weave in and out of traffic or around parked cars.
- Use the appropriate lane. For example, do not ride in a left-turn only lane if you are going straight through the intersection.
- Never cycle while under the influence of alcohol.
