A letter to my 13 year old daughter from a very proud Dad.
Dear Kathryn
Sunday: 08 March 2009 I wake you up at 04h30, you might be slow in getting up but do not complain. We pack the tandem onto the car in wind still conditions and head to collect some friends for the trip to start of the 2009 Argus Cycle Tour. We discover the wind is howling and the nerves and anxiety start to affect you. Probably the strongest winds in the history of the Argus are blowing and the start is frightening. As we set off we cannot get on the tandem due to the wind then have to push the bike just to get over the starting mats. Anxiety turns to fear and you doubt if this is a good idea, but you put your full trust in me as I say lets just get through this bit and see how it goes. Many are turning back unable to face what lies ahead. We make it over hopital bend and start to feel great. Mechanical problems set us back on Boyes Drive but you are the one who says come on Dad we are wasting time, lets keep going even though we do not have the use of the small chain ring. We push through to Simonstown where the bike is repaired for us. Off we go again.
We fight the head winds and even lead the pack at times. We fly towards Scarborough at speeds unheard of and you trust me to keep us safe, just managing to stop for Bar Ones on the way. Leg rub for Dad at the bottom of Chappies and a visit to the medical tent for you, but this does not deter you and off we go again. Leg rub for you at the top of Chappies and we fly down at break neck speed having to put the breaks on going downhill at stages. But you remain strong. Suikebossie is a breeze, going down the otherside is the problem and your nerves and trust in me to keep us upright are tested to the full. We see Mandy pushing her bike just to stay upright. We hit Canmps Bay and the Bar Ones kick in and fly to the finish meeting up with Mandy as we cross the finish line. This was number 18 for me and by far the toughest ever. You were just awesome to have the guts to perservere under such adverse conditions, this was real character building stuff and I am so so proud of you.
Love Your Dad

Goeie dag almal
Die Argus het gekom en saam met hom nie die hitte nie, maar die suidooster op sy beste
Van waar ek voor die TV gesit het en na die wegspring groepe gekyk het, het ek geweet dat in die huis die beste plek was om te wees.
I am sure that the only PB’s were ridden by first timers. Those that I spoke to, added at least 30 minutes to last years times. Felt very sorry for the organisers.
This week is a full rest week with first official rides on Saturday and Sunday.
Michel has suggested a post ARGUS ‘thank the family ride’ on Sunday with a breakfast at DULCE’S after the ride.
See blog for details
We are trying to get all our clubmembers times from the chip timing organisation.
Will publish all the times as soon as we can get hold of them.
Enjoy the rest time, mountain bike season starts soon.
Maybe go to the start of the EPIC which starts in Gordons bay in 2 weeks time. Watch the press.
More news next week

It's not the bike or the legs that are making you strong but the good spirit and guts.

Alf, Zelda and Paul met up with this cyclist riding barefoot in long pants with no water on Clarence Drive. He maintained an average of 28km/h all the way to Rooiels. They were so impressed that the Good Samaritans are preparing a bag of goodies which includes shoes for him to collect from Maverick.Monday, March 02, 2009
14 Riders better prepared for the Argus
Boyes Drive will cause a lot of problems during the Argus. This
was the consent of 14 riders taking part in the "Pre-Argus"-Tour" organized by Hertzel and Volki.
was the consent of 14 riders taking part in the "Pre-Argus"-Tour" organized by Hertzel and Volki. The steep descent towards Kalk Bay Harbour must be a major concern for all 35.000 cyclists. If one tries to be clever and isn't 100% cautious it will lead to a mass fall.Compared to Hospital Bend this stretch is a lot narrower and a lot steeper. It has the making of a Tour de France stretch so everyone has to act professional.

Goeie dag almal
Ek was nie hierdie naweek by die oggend ritte nie, vertrou alles het goed afgeloop. Dit was dan die laaste lang ritte voor die Argus.
Hertzel and gang did a BOYES DRIVE ride. Hope all went well there and that those who went will be better prepared after the ride.
Nognie die program vir hierdie week gesien nie, sal seker net losmakers wees. Hou maar die BLOG dop vir die details
Well, ARGUS time is here.
From all on the committee our best wishes and uneventful ride to all. For those who trained hard, may the ride be successful and the result a PB, for all the others, just enjoy.
It would be great if all the riders could inform us of their ride on the club e-mail. We would like to hear about PB’s and some other nonsense news.
Look on the BLOG for a post ARGUS ride suggested by Michel. All interested parties once again write to us on the e-mail address.
Kit is now available at Helderberg Cycle world and at Maverick. Please try to wear clubkitg on the ARGUS race.
